Maintenance │ Precautions for Restarting Japanese “STAR” Machine Tools After a Long-Term Shutdown

Before resuming normal machining after a machine tool has been shut down for an extended period, the machine must undergo a break-in operation. Operating the machine immediately may cause damage to the spindle, guideways and ball screws. In more serious cases, high-speed tool spindles may seize due to insufficient lubrication, resulting in unnecessary damage to the machine. Therefore, please follow the steps below before resuming machining operations.

Operating Procedures

1.First, check the machine's power supply voltage and inspect the power supply circuits for any visible damage. After confirming that everything is normal, press the machine's emergency stop button and restart the machine. Allow the machine to remain powered on in the emergency-stop state for 30 minutes, and check that all fans are operating normally. Then release the emergency stop. This procedure helps remove moisture from the electronic boards. It also allows the machine to be powered on without moving the mechanical components, enabling the guideway lubrication system to supply oil while the machine remains stationary.

2.Open the machine enclosure and clean the guideways that were coated with anti-rust grease before the shutdown. Also inspect other mechanical components for any signs of rust.

3.If the machine's cutting-fluid tank has not been cleaned for an extended period, it is recommended to drain all the cutting fluid, thoroughly clean the tank, and replace any deteriorated cutting fluid.

4.Check whether the oil levels in all machine tanks meet the required levels, including hydraulic oil, guideway lubricant and cutting fluid. Apply lubricating grease to the gears of the driven tools.

5.Select manual mode (MDI) and enter M1150. Execute the command to perform the manual lubrication cycle, lubricating the ball screws and guideways of each axis.

6.Select manual mode (MDI). Run the main spindle, sub-spindle and tool spindles at 300 rpm for 10 minutes, followed by 600 rpm for 10 minutes, and then 1,000 rpm for 10 minutes to perform spindle break-in.

7.Using the handwheel, slowly move each machine axis through its full travel range. Then run the warm-up program to perform idle operation of each axis for 10 minutes.

8.Check the machine's basic functions, including cutting-fluid supply and the operation of the parts catcher.

9.After completing the above procedures, the machine can resume normal machining operations.
